Another Journey to Saving the Buffalo National River

In March of 2015, three women, Dr. Nancy Haller, Carol Bitting, and Lin Wellford, independently attended a public hearing in Jasper, objecting to the modification of a permit which would allow untreated swine waste to be sprayed on the karst terrain around the watershed of the Buffalo National River. They knew that the river’s ecosystem is sensitive and already at risk. Two of the Three Grandmothers will speak with us about their passion for the Buffalo National and their reasons for banding together and fighting the pollution of it.
Carol Bitting, who lives on a tributary of the BNR, has volunteered her services by contributing to field studies and documentation of karst features within the Buffalo River watershed in Arkansas and other states. Lin Wellford, a resident of Carroll County, has been involved in preserving and protecting Ozark waterways for many years. Both women enjoy paddling the river and want to see it preserved for generations to come. In addition, Carol is a member of the National Speleological Society, the Association for Arkansas Cave Studies, Arkansas Canoe Club, and Buffalo River Back Country Horsemen. Lin serves on the board of the Kings River Watershed Partnership and is an active member of the Ozark River Stewards.
