ENCOURAGE YOUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES TO SUPPORT A PERMANENT MORATORIUM
NO MORE PERMITS FOR SWINE CAFOS IN THE BUFFALO RIVER WATERSHED!
We ask all who are concerned about long-term protection of the Buffalo to let your elected legislators know you support a permanent moratorium, especially if your state Senator or Representative sits on The Arkansas legislative Council. Special interests who are opposed to a moratorium, claiming it violates the "right-to-farm", have been working to encourage defeat of our efforts.
See links for contact information below.
Revisions to Regulations 5 and 6 of the Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commission, which include a halt to the issuance of operating permits for swine confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in the Buffalo River watershed, are being addressed by the legislature. The Joint Committee for Public Health tabled the issue in March and it was finally rescheduled in June. Again supporters submitted comments and public attendance was not allowed. This committee voted to not review the rule change. The permanent moratorium is a controversial issue with active opposition from Farm Bureau and others claiming it threatens the “right to farm”. Now the issue moves to the Administrative Rules Committee for their review and then on to the Legislative Council on June 19th.
Will you please take a moment to email, text or call your legislators ? Tell them that you, as a constituent, support protections for the Buffalo National River, and ask them to please support the proposed revisions to Regulations 5 and 6, including provisions for a halt in swine CAFO permits in the Buffalo River watershed.
Sample text message: The Buffalo National River and the economy it provides for several Arkansas counties and the State deserves a permanent moratorium on swine CAFOs. (This is NOT a “Right to Farm” issue; it is for the protection of the Buffalo National River. The BR watershed is the wrong location for industrialized swine factories.)
